…School buildings, markets, houses destroyed

Residents of Aji community of Enugu Ezike, in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State are counting their losses after windstorm destroyed community projects, houses, markets and residential buildings in the area.

Among property destroyed were six blocks classrooms at the community college, Aji High School, part of the roof of Central School, Aji, rooftop of the moribund Community borehole, palm oil depot and many stores at Nkwo market , Aji among other private buildings.

Traditional Ruler of Aji community, Igwe Simeon Osisi Itodo, and the Chairman of Aji Town Union, Ichie Sylvester Ayogu, who spoke to Daily Sun, described the damages as great set back to the community though they thanked God that no life was lost that Tuesday night when the great hurricane and storm hit the community.

Igwe Itodo who said he has taken pictures of the damages with accompanying letter to the State Post Primary Education Board intimating the office about the calamity noted that the community school needs urgent government attention having been dilapidated with no new or rehabilitated structure since the school started in 1976.

He thanked Enugu State Governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for his numerous interventionist projects he had executed in Enugu State in the last two years expressing hope that the community will benefit in the nearest future.

Principal of Aji High School, Onah Cletus, while conducting the reporter round the damaged school building noted that the students who occupied the 6 classroom blocks before the damage now had to put up in mango trees for study while some have been paired with other classes thereby overcrowding the spaces.

The town union President, Ichie Ayogu said that the community has convened a mass return by the end of this month to solicit for financial assistance from their sons residing outside so that they can tackle numerous development challenges facing them.

A widow, Roseline Itodo, whom the roof of her four bedroom bungalow was blown off by the windstorm, was seen gathering the broken woods and searching for help to repair the house.
