The Federal Government has said, beginning from next year, practising teachers, whose biodata are not captured in the database of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) would not be allowed to enter the classroom for whatever reason.
They also risk arrest. Although a specific date has not been announced, government maintained that by the end of the TRCN grace period, any unregistered teacher found in the classroom would be arrested and handed over to appropriate authorities for prosecution.
Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu announced the development in Abuja, yesterday, shortly after administering the oath of office on newly-appointed chairmen and members of governing boards of 21 Federal Colleges of Education (FCE). The governing boards are the highest decision making body of the institution.
Daily Sun learnt that the 21 FCEs have been operating without a governing board since 2015, a situation which limited the pace of development in the institutions, academically and otherwise.
Adamu, who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah, stressed that “gone are days when teaching profession was an ‘all-comers affair’ where people without passion and interest in the profession invade to earn a living…”
