Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday promised a thorough investigation into the cause of a bus collision that killed 47 people.

According to police, 47 people were killed and 61 others injured when two buses collided on Wednesday near the north-western town of Rusape.

“As we move forward, it is incumbent to investigate what happened, draw the relevant insights and implement them to make these tragic incidents a thing of the past,’’ Mnangagwa said in a statement.

District police spokesman Isaac Gowe told dpa that according to initial accounts, one of the drivers tried to overtake, in spite of low visibility and drove into the side of the other bus.

“They both lost control of the buses, which were travelling between the capital, Harare, and the town of Mutare, carrying a total of 130 passengers,’’ Gowe said.

Like in many other African nations, traffic accidents are common in Zimbabwe, due to poor road infrastructure and insufficient road worthiness of vehicles.
