• Varsity matriculates 5,700 students

The Vice Chancellor, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, has admonished fresh students of the institution against involvement in cultism and other anti-social behaviours and academic misconduct.

He warned that any breach of the social vices attracts dare consequences that included suspension, expulsion or prosecution.

Speaking in his address on the occasion of the 43rd matriculation ceremony of the university, where 5,700 students were matriculated, Okolie who said the university has zero tolerance for social vices listed some of the condemnable vices to include: examination misconduct, admission racketeering, sorting for grades, sexual harassment, drug abuse, indecent dressing, fighting and wilful damage of university property.

The VC who was represented at the occasion at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, by the Dean of the Faculty, Prof Nicholas Attamah, disclosed that a total of 6,200 candidates were offered admission in the 2023/2024 academic session while 5,700 had so far accepted the offer.

The 43rd matriculation ceremony was the first to be held at Faculty levels which Prof Attamah explained was done by the VC to bring the parents closer to know and interact with their children’s parents-in-school/lecturers.

Describing ESUT as the first University of Technology in Nigeria, the Vice Chancellor said “The university does not condone any act of indiscipline. Therefore, you must imbibe good virtues and eschew all forms of social vices, knowing that the freedom you have to exercise your rights stops where the rights of your neighbours begin.”

He assured that all necessary provisions had been put in place to maintain security on campus, adding that a combined team of ESUT security, Man O War, Anti-Drug and the Police were in 24-hour surveillance of the university environment.

Also admonishing the fresh students, a 400-level students in the Department of English and Literary Studies, Mr Ikenna Ezenwa, urged them to manage their time well, shun cultism and imbibe Godliness, hard work and excellence throughout their stay in the university.
