The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has matriculated 10,000 students admitted for the 2023/2024 academic session to study various courses in the institution.

Prof Charles Igwe, the Vice-Chancellor of the university in his address in Nsukka yesterday for the 49th Matriculation Ceremony of the institution said that only 30 per cent of candidates who applied for admission in the university for the 2023/2024 academic session are admitted.

He told the admitted students to count themselves lucky for getting admission to the university, stressing that UNN had remained competitive because of the good reputation and academic records it had achieved over the years.

“You should be proud of yourself for gaining admission to this university of your dream, only 30 per of candidates that applied for admission in the 2023/2024 academic session are admitted.

“UNN remains one of the biggest and most respected universities in the country.

“Our philosophy is to seek truth, teach truth, preach truth as well as to restore the dignity of man,” he said.

The VC  said that this was the reason the UNN placed a high premium on character and learning and ensured that degrees, diplomas, and certificates were only awarded to those found worthy in character and learning.

Igwe warned the newly admitted students to avoid any form of secret cult as the university had zero tolerance for cultism.

“Any student found to be involved in secret cult activities will be expelled and handed over to the police for prosecution.

“Students are expected to register and belong to organisations and associations that are recognised by the Department of Students’ Affairs of UNN.

“Also avoid the use of illicit drugs as well as cybercrime frauds by avoiding peer groups that will lead you into the temptations, so that you will not mar your future,” he said.

He reminded the freshmen that the journey towards getting first-class degree on graduation had started now through hard work and dedication to studies.

“Your ultimate ambition as a student should be how to behave well and dedicate yourself to studies to make first class on graduation, to make your parents proud.

“You are the one to determine the kind of grade you will make on graduation, remember, the way you make your bed, so you will lie on it,” the VC added.

The new students took matriculation oaths in their various faculties, promising to abide by the rules and regulations of the institution.

Some of the students interviewed expressed their gratitude to God who made it possible for them to get admission to UNN.

They expressed special appreciation to their parents for investing in their education and promised to make them proud by graduating in flying colours.
