The Coalition of Ethnic Nationalities on the North Central (CENNC) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to intensify its investigation into allegations of fraud against Prof Tanko Ishaya, Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Plateau State.

Media reports have surfaced alleging that the EFCC has questioned Prof Ishaya regarding alleged financial improprieties. The commission reportedly invited the VC and the University’s Deputy Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Yusuf Abdullahi, for questioning on March 26, 2024.

The CENNC, in a statement signed by Comrade Dominic Nanpshak, expressed concern over the allegations of money laundering amounting to 300 million naira against Prof Ishaya. Nanpshak stated that the allegations, if true, warrant the VC’s dismissal, as he is no longer fit to hold such a position.

The group emphasised the severity of the accusations, stating that they cast a shadow over the university’s leadership and necessitated a thorough investigation. They warned that failure to address the matter could damage the institution’s reputation.

Nanpshak further urged the university’s governing council to suspend Prof Ishaya pending the outcome of the investigation. He stressed the importance of accountability and transparency in the handling of public funds, especially within educational institutions.

The CENNC also called on the president to uphold the principles of transparency and integrity in governance. They emphasised that the welfare and interests of students and staff must be protected through accountable and ethical leadership.

The University of Jos alumni and stakeholders across Plateau State are closely monitoring the situation, awaiting the results of the EFCC investigation and the university’s subsequent actions. The community remains committed to upholding the values of integrity and accountability in all aspects of public life.
