Jovana Farms supplies  farmers who take part in the small-scale grasscutter farming project with 4-5 months old breeding colonies and cages. Because the animals are for breeding purpose at this stage, farmers are trained to take special care of them.

We feel strongly that if we as commercial grasscutter farmers had done more – on our own and without government pushing us – to build up small-scale farmers, things might have turned out very differently.

After all, the small-scale farmers were also reliant on a fully functioning agricultural value chain. If there had been interdependence between established commercial farmers and small-scale farmers we make small-scale grasscutter farming successful.

Jovana Farms believes that commercial farmers should become involved in new farmer development for two good reasons: It will benefit the entire agricultural sector and more altruistically, it’s their responsibility to share and pass on their skills.

With this in mind, we are determined that we would mentor any person/ group of farmers, enabling them to enter the grasscutter farming sector.

By introducing the BUY-BACK-GRASSCUTTER-INITIATIVE (BBGI), we’re helping small-scale farmers to grow! Within a year, we had 30 farmers, under this mentorship project, each farming about 25 grasscutters in wooden cages in a small space around their homes. We strongly believe that agricultural empowerment initiatives that are entrusted to co-operatives or groups are doomed to failure because there is no clear individual responsibility. The farmers who are involved in our BBGI know that they have only themselves to blame for their failure – or thank for their success.

Without a strong sense of ownership, there’s also a lack of responsibility. When everybody is in charge, nobody is in charge, and the work just doesn’t get done.

The idea behind the BBGI was to establish successful small-scale farmers who are encouraged by market availability for their animals. I don’t think new and small-scale farmers can be successful if they farm without ready customers.  They need support from the commercial industry and a secure market. In light of this, Jovana Farms’ decision to offer assistance was heaven-sent. Many new and small-scale projects struggle because they don’t communicate with the industry in which they operate to seek support.

For most farmers, especially new and small-scale producers, two of the greatest challenges in grasscutter farming is sourcing export market and navigating the logistics of obtaining quality breeding animals at the right time.  However, Jovana Farms is the right partner to tackle the above challenges with! Another important aspect of the initiative is that by grouping several farmers together at one facility we were able to create economy of scale – to an extent, anyway – which immediately helps lower the individual running costs for each farmer. The important principle of the scheme is that all the farmers must take complete responsibility for their own farming business.

For us, the bottom line is that the project has to make commercial sense. This means that no grants are given. We assist the farmers by providing a realistic buy-back-grasscutter model.

If a project has to rely on grants, it means the core business model is unsustainable; in which case the farmers involved will never be able to farm independently.

Many small-scale farmers struggle to farm successfully because they do not have ready market and a strong support system.  We train farmers to understand the total value chain and are involved throughout the production cycle. We supply them with our top quality crossbreed grasscutter breeding colonies. Once the grasscutters are market-ready, we buy-them-back from the farmer and pay cash on the spot. However, we believe that what sets the project apart from the many agricultural empowerment initiatives that have failed is the strong mentorship management support provided through BBGI.

Jovana Farms is determined to grow the grasscutter sector into a profitable and sustainable industry to benefit farmers and the economy.
