A student at Bishop Crowther Memorial Seminary School in Awka, Anambra State, has died in a late-night fire. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but it broke out around 11:30 pm and destroyed many student belongings.

The Anambra State Fire Chief, Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed the incident and stated that firefighters were deployed to the scene and contained the blaze. The fire chief visited the school on Sunday for an inspection and learned from the principal that the fire had affected a portion of the school’s hostel.

“The Anambra State Fire Service Chief arrived at Bishop Crowther Memorial Seminary School, Awka at 10:55 a.m. on Sunday, for a firsthand inspection and assessment of the level of damages caused by the fire outbreak that occurred on Saturday night in the school,” the statement read.

“Recall that Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call at 11:30 pm, on Saturday, May 18, 2024, which reported a fire outbreak in one of the school’s hostels. Our firefighters and one of the fire trucks were deployed immediately to the scene of the incident, and the fire was contained.”

The statement further confirmed that one student died in the fire and was taken to the mortuary. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The school principal, Venerable Dr Emendu, commended the fire service for their prompt response and stated that there were no other casualties or injuries. He expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased student.

The fire chief also offered his condolences and urged the school community to take heart during this difficult time. He emphasized the importance of fire safety and urged everyone to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent similar tragedies.
