The last six years have seen a radical change on our farm. Our operation earlier was focused on grasscutter, fish, rabbit and mushroom, but we also kept subsistence giant snails as a sideline. Hardy and well-adapted, they required relatively few inputs and did not distract from the main business of the farm.
As time went by, we realised that they could benefit from the growing popularity of emerging snail business. So we converted our subsistence free range snail farming to a money making venture. This was an immediate success, and we now have thousands of snails that make up the farm turnover.
We realised there was money to be made from snails. Returns on investing in the best genetics are considerable. Our high quality 18-months old snail breeders regularly sell to farmers at N500 each. This makes stud breeding a viable economic option for us.
It was a good decision to acquire the best genetics from the outset. Initially we bought 3000 snails with proven breeding ability from abroad. These animals and their offspring formed the foundation of our breeds.

Our snails are a well-adapted, fertile and hardy animal that can lay large number of eggs. Our animals thrive under intensive and extensive conditions and we slaughter whatever doesn’t meet required parameters.
Snail is as an excellent option for diversification because of the availability of several highly nutritious agro by-products, kitchen waste, manure and grasses.
We’re very particular about genetics. Poor genetics can cause serious harm in a stud. The damage can’t be fixed overnight and could cost us a lot of money in the long run.
