The Arewa Progressive Youths League, has cautioned Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to desist from disrespecting northern elders.

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), during an interview with the BBC, was quoted to have said: “On the issue of elders, there is nothing like elders; I am also an elder; I will be 63 years old this year, 2023, so who are the elders in the North?” We, the Northern governors, are the elders, and we are the leaders of the North. “Age does not indicate being responsible.”

Piqued by his response, the Leader of the group, Sanusi Ibrahim, in a statement yesterday, described the remark as  “indecorous, erratic”, and urged the northern public not to lose their guard and fall for the “lies and deceptions” by El-Rufai who present himself as the common man.

Ibrahim said: “…It is therefore the highest peak of insanity for such a man with questionable pedigree to make such sweeping generalization against the respected northern elders, custodians of the northern values and expect to get away with it.

“We find it ridiculous and insulting to the collective sensibilities of the ordinary everyday Nigerians for  El-Rufai, with his despotic tendencies as a political leader to have the audacity to pose today as defender of the poor and the vulnerable.”
