Yellow House also known as St. Dominic house has emerged winner at the just concluded Dominican Nursery and Primary 5th Bi-annual inter-house sports held at the school’s open field last Friday.

St. Dominic House clinched the medal table with a total of seventeen gold medals while St Rose of Lima (Red house) came second with ten gold medals and St. Catherine of Sienna ((Green House) was third with nine gold medals. St Martin De Porres (Orange House) came fourth with six gold medals and St Thomas Aquinas was fifth with five gold medals.

In her welcome address, the head of schools Rev. Sr Caroline Igwe Op, said that sports in general help in shaping and leading life the right way and gives one an opportunity to have a broader view of the world and life.

According to her,” This inter-house sport, which ordinarily entails competition, goes beyond that, as it makes a lasting impact in the formation of the children. Its efficacy fosters unity, love and co-operation among pupils who are put together from various classes”.

She added that holistic education goes beyond forming the cognitive domain with a balance of the social and psychomotor domain in order to have a balanced individual. “The inter-house sports become a very concrete way of inculcating in them those values like discipline, self-esteem, self-confidence, teamwork, responsibility and collaboration”.

Also speaking at the event was the chairman of the occasion, Mr. Obinna Ezeani said that inter-house sports is an avenue used in discovering athletes that will represent the country in track and field events at the state and national levels.

He added that most players and athletes in the past were discovered either from Principal’s Cup or inter-house sports but the reverse is the case today. Coaches do not go to schools to hunt or discover talents anymore, which have greatly affected our sports at various levels.

In the other events decided during the heat, St. Rose of Lima (Red House) came first in Short Put while St. Martin De Porres (Orange House) and St. Thomas Aquinas (Blue House) came second and third respectively. In the Short put girls’ event, St. Catherine of Sienna (Green House) clinched gold, St. Dominic (Yellow House) won silver and St. Rose of Lima got bronze. For the March Past event, St. Martin De Porres took the lead winning gold while St. Dominic got Silver and St. Rose of Lima won Bronze. St Catherine of Sienna and St Thomas Aquinas came fourth and fifth respectively.

Furthermore in the team events, Yellow house took the lead in the round lather game played by the boys to clinched the gold, Orange house won silver and Red house went home with Bronze medal. The girls were not left out as they participated in volleyball. Orange house got Gold while silver and bronze medals went to Green house and Red house respectively.

Other events that added colour to the inter-house sports include Tug of war, Badminton, Swimming, Ping Pong game and High Jump.

In addition, for the 4×100m invited school relay race, Glorious Words private school emerged winner in the boys’ category and Rosyland private school came second. On the other hand, in the girls’ 4×100m invited school relay race Rosyland took the lead and second position went to Glorious Words private school. Out of six invited private schools only two schools honoured the invite.

However, a minute silence was observed in honour of Mr. Sunday Awevia a parent; who died on Thursday, a day before the inter-house sport.
