Kano, May 24, 2024 — Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has presented a letter reappointing  Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano. The reinstatement ceremony took place at the Government House in Kano, where Sanusi received his letter of appointment.

Governor Yusuf, invoking the powers granted by the Kano Emirate Council Laws of 1984 and 2024, confirmed Sanusi’s reappointment. “Supported by the recommendation of the kingmakers, I have the singular pleasure of confirming the reappointment of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and the head of the Kano Emirate Council,” Yusuf stated.

Sanusi’s reappointment, according to the governor, is based on his competence, credibility, and popularity. Yusuf urged the newly reinstated emir to adhere to Islamic principles and work towards uniting the emirate, fostering harmony among the Islamic sects in the state.

Sanusi previously served as the 14th Emir of Kano before being deposed in 2020 following a conflict with then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, now the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress. In a move to diminish Sanusi’s influence, the Kano House of Assembly passed a bill to split the Kano Emirate Council into five emirates. Sanusi was replaced by Aminu Ado Bayero, who was recently deposed.

On May 23, 2024, the Assembly dissolved the five newly created emirate councils—Bichi, Karaye, Gaya, Rano, and Kano—and passed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024, which reinstated the original structure and Sanusi’s position. The governor issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the five emirs to vacate their residences.

Reflecting on the past events, Governor Yusuf described Sanusi’s dethronement in 2019 as victimization, stating that his reinstatement serves the interests of Kano’s residents. “We had a series of meetings with the kingmakers, extensive discussions with the Speaker, and consultations with all heads of security. Ultimately, we repealed the former law and signed the new law reinstating Sanusi,” Yusuf explained.

The ceremony was attended by traditional rulers, kingmakers, and other dignitaries, marking a significant moment in Kano’s history.
