National President of Nigeria Union Teachers (NUT), Comrade Michael Alogba Olukoya, on Wednesday, warned teachers in Ogun State to register and update their status with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) or risk sack.

He equally warned that teachers in the state should disregard calls being made by some individuals parading themselves as union leaders that the registration was not mandatory.

He urged the teachers to seize the window of opportunity by TRCN to get registered as professional teachers.

Olukoya gave this warning during a press conference in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

According to him, TRCN is the only statutory body recognised by the law to register professional teachers in Nigeria and urged teachers not be deceived by people who have been urging them to ignore the registration.

On the complain that the cost of registration was N7,000 per teacher, Olukoya debunked the claim saying “teachers with degrees would only pay N3,000 while their NCE counterparts would the sum of N2,000”.

The NUT national president, who disclosed that by September, NUT, would start picketing private schools on the need to employ professional teachers, also said leadership of the union would issue a marching order to state governments to ensure only duly registered teachers are engaged by them.

He, therefore, urged principals and head teachers in the state public secondary and primary schools, to continue to sensitize teachers on the need to register before the close of the exercise at the end 2017.

Meanwhile, Olukoya, expressed the union’s gratitude to Governor Ibikunle Amosun over the pardon he granted three members of the union in the state – Messrs Dare Ilekoya, Eniola Atiku and Nola Balogun – hitherto dismissed for gross misconduct.

He added that the union in the state under the new leadership of Comrade Titi Adebanjo, would not engage in any activities capable of pitching it with the state government adding the body would rather engage in what he termed “scientific unionism” than involving itself in politics.
