Following repeated attacks on rail passengers by hoodlums and deadly kidnappers, rail travel has drastically reduced to 500,348 in Q3 lower than the 696,841 reported in the corresponding quarter of 2021.

In a statement obtained from National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) website, the figure represents a growth rate of -28.20 per cent.

Meanwhile, NBS said that 33,312 tons of goods were transported in Q3 2022, compared to 51,726 tons reported in Q3 2021.

In terms of revenue generation, N715.09 million was received from passengers over the period, lower by 60.52 per cent relative to N1.81 billion in the same quarter of the previous year. Similarly, N101.84 million was collected in Q3 2022 as revenue from goods/ cargos, down by 7.04 per cent from N109.56 million received in Q3 2021. Also, other receipts grew by 707.31 per cent in Q3 2022 from the N14.61 million collected in Q3 2021.

In Q4 2022, the number of passengers rose by 30.10 per cent to 1.34 million persons from 1.03 million persons in Q4 2021, while the volume of goods transported decreased by 1.50 per cent.

Also, revenue generated from passengers stood at N1.15 billion, a decrease of 39.54 per cent from the same period last year when N1.91 billion was reported. Moreso, revenue generated from goods in Q4 2022 was N157.23 million, higher by 63.56 per cent compared to N96.13 million reported in Q4 2021.

“Other income receipts stood at N382.17 million, an increase of 3,316.18 per cent from the N11.19 million recorded in the same period of the preceding year. However, on annual basis, the number of passengers increased by 18.36 per cent” the bureau, noted.

In another development, NBS disclosed that the total electricity customers in Q3 2022 rose to 10.94 million from 10.81 million in Q2 2022, showing a rise of 1.20 per cent. On a year-on-year basis, customer numbers in Q3 2022 declined by 1.19 per cent from Q3 2021 (11.07 million).

Also, in Q3 2022, metered customers stood at 5.02 million from 4.96 million in Q2 2022, indicating a 1.33 per cent increase. However, on a year-on-year basis, this grew by 5.71 per cent from the figure reported in Q3 2021 which was 4.75 million.

Similarly, estimated customers stood at 5.91 million in Q3 2022, higher by 1.09 per cent from 5.85 million in Q2 2022.

On a year-on-year basis, estimated customers declined by 6.38 per cent in Q3 2022 from 6.32 million in Q3 2021. Revenue collected by the DISCOs during the period stood at N202.62 billion in Q3 2022 from N188.41 billion in Q2 2022, showing a rise of 7.54 per cent. On a year-on-year basis, revenue generated rose by 5.56 per cent from N191.95 billion in Q3 2021.

“Electricity supply in Q3 2022 stood at 5,024 (Gwh) from 5,227 (Gwh) in the previous quarter. On a year-on-year basis, electricity supply declined by 8.53 per cent compared to 5,493 (Gwh) reported in Q3 2021” the bureau further explained.
