The Katsina State police command says its men rescued 52 passengers abducted by terrorists on Monday along the Funtua- Gusau highway.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, in a statement on Tuesday said the incident occurred at about 11.30pm at Unguwar Boka village.

According to him, “two motor-vehicles, a luxurious bus conveying passengers from Onitsha en route to Gusau, Zamfara State, and a Volkswagen Golf 3 en route to Zaria from Gusau, upon reaching a point at Unguwar Boka village, the bandits having barricaded the road, emerged from the bush and opened fire on the two motor-vehicles, forcing the drivers to veer off the road into the nearby bushe.

“Upon receipt of the report, promptly, the DPO mobilised operatives and responded to the scene, where they engaged the assailants in a fierce gun duel, successfully thwarted the kidnapping attempt and rescued all the passengers unhurt. “Efforts have been intensified to ensure the arrest of the fleeing suspects.

The Commissioner of Police while commending the bravery and professionalism of the operatives, appealed to the good people of the state to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals to the command for timely and decisive action.”

In a related development, the PPRO said that the police neutralised a total of 12 suspected terrorists and rescued over 30 kidnapped victims between April 1 and 30, 2024.

Also within the same period, 36 suspected rapists were arrested along with 10 murder suspects, among other suspected criminal elements.
