Some residents of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, have commended the Federal Government, for directing multinational oil companies to relocate their headquarters to their areas of operation.
They made the commendation in separate interviews, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Monday.
Recall that then acting President Yemi Osinbajo recently directed the oil companies to relocate their headquarters back to their areas of operation in the Niger Delta.
An environmental activist, Dr Kulu Ogborigbo, said that the federal government’s directive was a welcome development.
Ogborigbo noted that locating the headquarters of the multinational companies outside their areas of operation was retrogressive and against the development of the host communities.
Another resident, Mr. Fidelis Ogoli said that if the oil companies relocate back to the Niger Delta, it would generate employment and ensure peace in the region.
Ogoli stressed that the relocation order was a wise decision.
Mrs. Ann Obiri also commended the directive by the acting president and urged the federal government to ensure its implementation for the development of the region.
Obiri said that the initiative would engender economic activities in the region and create wealth for the people.
Another environmentalist, Mr. Okey Tiro, said that the directive was a positive one and would bring back peace to the Niger Delta.
“Relocating the headquarters of the multinational oil companies out of the Niger Delta was a major injustice to the people,” Tiro said.
Mrs. Amina Rueben urged the federal government to ensure that the companies complied with the directive.
“If government ensures compliance with the directive, the people of the area will have more confidence in the present administration,” she said. (NAN)
