The new management of Benue State University Teaching Hospital, (BSUTH), Makurdi, said it has uncovered expired medicines worth over N100 million at the Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital, Makurdi.

Chief Medical Director, BSUTH, Dr Stephen Hwande, disclosed this on Tuesday after taking a tour of the facility at the Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital, Makurdi preparatory to commencement of service delivery.

Hwande, who noted that the expired drugs would be destroyed publicly on Friday, November 3, 2023, said the destruction was necessary for him to start on a clean slate.

He further expressed worries why medicines worth such huge sums of money would be allowed to expire in a state that has so many IDPs and other persons of concern that needed them.

Hwande promised that under Governor Alia’s administration, Benue citizens would receive the best and affordable medical services.

He commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for his interest in the health of Benue people, saying his interest has prevented the Federal Government from taking back the mother and child hospital from the State due to under utilization.

The Chief Medical Director said when the hospital become operational, services like IVF, out patients, health insurance, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology as well as mild surgery would be offered at a rate that would be afforded by the common man while antenatal cards and cards for children under five years would be free.

The Coordinator of the Hospital, Dr. Luper Uva stated that although the hospital was built for only women and children, the new Chief Medical Director, Dr. Stephen Hwande thought it wise to add a general outpatients department to enable men also get treatment at the facility.

Dr. Uva thanked the CMD for ensuring that the hospital operate an electronic medical record facility which would make services efficient and easier.

“We have solar systems where uninterrupted light, water and other facilities operates all day”.he said.

The 120 bed Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital was built by the Office ofbthe Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, (OSSAP-SDGs), Abuja 2021 Sustainable Project.
