From Abel Leonard, Lafia

A journalist, Edwin Philip, working with Breeze FM 99.9 Lafia, was brutally beaten up during the governorship and state Assemblies elections yesterday.

Philips said some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had asked voters to stay away from a polling unit near the modern market in Lafia.

He added that they had also threatened voters, telling them that they would ink their fingers and ask them to return later in the day to cast their votes.

Edwin said upon realising the gravity of the situation, he tried to seek help from the police and other security agencies, but his   call was unanswered.

He said in his desperation, he complained to   officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) about the issue. But rather than intervening, the officials allegedly instructed a certain Gari of Lafia to beat him up.

As a result, Philip said he was beaten and wounded, suffering injuries to his head.

The incident has been condemned by various media organisations and political parties, who have demanded strict action against the culprits.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Nansel Ramhan, said they had launched an investigation into the matter, promising that the culprit would face justice. .
