The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) as well as Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) have noted that the court order purportedly stopping the reinstatement of Emir Sanusi could cause tension, instability and conflict in the state.

Specifically, Professor Ango Abdullahi led Northern Elders Forum, cautioned that every stakeholder in the unfolding situation should tread with civility.

NEF spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman told Saturday Sun that it was regrettable that power and influence of the traditional rulers are now at the detriment of politicians who easily manipulate them.

Suleiman said: “We are aware that the court order restraining the Kano State government from installing Sanusi as Emir of Kano has sparked a wave of controversy and debate across the nation. As leaders concerned with the rule of law and the integrity of our judicial system, our reaction to this development is one of cautious optimism.

“On one hand, the court order represents a victory for the principles of justice and due process. It demonstrates that the judiciary is willing to intervene and uphold the rule of law, even in cases where powerful political interests may be at play. By restraining the state government from installing Sanusi as Emir, the court has sent a clear message that no one is above the law, and that decisions must be made in accordance with legal procedures and protocols.

“At the same time, the installation of an Emir is a deeply symbolic and culturally significant event in northern Nigeria, and any interference by the judiciary could be seen as an overreach of judicial power into the domain of traditional and cultural practices. It is essential that the judiciary balances the need for legal accountability with the respect for local customs and traditions.

“Furthermore, the ongoing power struggle within the Kano emirate revealed deep-seated tensions and divisions within the state. The court order may exacerbate these tensions and lead to further instability and conflict.”

Also speaking, National President of AYCF, Yerima Shettima said: “We see the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano as a complex and contentious issue that has elicited a wide range of reactions. While there are valid reasons to celebrate this decision as a step towards justice and accountability, there are also legitimate concerns about its potential implications and the role of the courts in upholding it. As we wait for the final verdict, it is essential for all stakeholders to approach this matter with caution, respect for the rule of law, and a commitment to the well-being of the people of Kano. “On one hand, the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano is a significant victory for justice and accountability. His removal from the position was widely condemned as a violation of his rights and an abuse of power by the state government. By reversing this decision and restoring him to his rightful position, the government has demonstrated its willingness to correct its past mistakes and uphold the rule of law.

“However, there is also a sense of caution and apprehension surrounding this decision. The state government’s move to reinstate Sanusi Lamido Sanusi could potentially be seen as a political ploy to gain favour with the public and deflect attention from other pressing issues. Moreover, there are concerns about the legal implications of this decision and whether the courts will uphold it.

“If the courts were to intervene and stop the state government from restoring Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, it could lead to a further escalation of tensions between the government and the judiciary.”
