The Minister of Education, Tahir  Mamman has decried the low enrollment of students of Northern States into Federal Unity Colleges, saying that most Northern states do not fill their quotas.
Mamman spoke during an Advocacy visit to the Kano State Ministry of Education.
Represented by the Head Junior Secondary Education in the Ministry, Edith Osanyinpejun, the Minister revealed that statistics from the National Examination Council (NECO) indicated that most states in the region had low enrollment in the National Common Entrance Examination and Gifted Examination.
He stressed the need for sensitization and advocacy, noting that ” Kano was among the first Northern States to introduce  enrollment sensitization campaign into Federal Unity Colleges during which the state had higher percentage..
He regretted that in the absence of these sensitization programs in the last few years, the enrollment had dropped
According to him, last year’s record showed that enrollment of students into Federal Unity Colleges in Kano State was just 574 candidates compared to 5000 enrollment when the campaign was implemented in the state.
” It is on this premise that the Federal Ministry of Education decided to bring stakeholders, parents and guardians together as part of its mandate to sensitize the community on the importance of quality education in the lives of our children, especially when the Entrance Examination for admission into the Federal Unity Colleges is coming up in April for the National Common Entrance Examination and May for the Gifted Examination.
Speaking, the Zonal Director North West National Examination Council, Charles E. Udoh commended the present administration of Abba Kabiru Yusuf for the support and cooperation it has been giving to the national body since its inception.
He maintained that NECO  would continue to provide the best services needed to improve the quality of education in the state.
