Laide Raheem, Abeokuta

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, on Monday, directed its members to embark on work-to-rule action indefinitely from Tuesday to press home its demands over alleged deplorable state of the institution.

The Zone ‘C’ coordinator of the Union, Olawale Omoobaorun, announced this at a news conference held at the school’s ASUP Secretariat, in Abeokuta. During the period, the Lecturers are expected to go to work, but not attend classes and close for work at the end of the day.

According to him, MAPOLY, established, 38 years ago, has been on the verge of collapsing in view of the challenges confronting the school.

He further alleged that the school was currently battling three-pronged “war of conspiracy” of its owner, the Ogun State Government; the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), in its quest for survival.

Omoobaorun, stated that the NBTE had refused to debunk or affirm the state government announcement that it had approved the take-off of the institution with a total of 18 courses accredited without requisite classroom, office facilities, laboratories and equipment.

His words, “It has become a clear cut issue that the state government, JAMB and NBTE has been politicising administration in MAPOLY.

“We challenge government and NBTE to make known to the public the second page of NBTE accreditation letter on Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia.

“The recent discovery from NBTE is that MAPOLY is no longer known to the body and that Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia, does not have accreditation to run any course.

“Our Union is therefore constrained to lament again that our sub-sector in Ogun State is in the verge of collapse and there needs all the emergency attention it urgently deserves”.

He also pointed out allegation of fraud on the part of the state government and MAPOLY management as regard the advertisement for admission into the school in 2017 with no single admission.

“We need to bring to the notice of the general public of fraud through misuse of power, deceit and maladministration on the part of Ogun State Government and management of MAPOLY. For example, in 2017, MAPOLY advertised admission with no single admission after collecting money from the public.

“In 2018, the state government advertised Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia, when it is feasible that the Ipokia can take-off immediately misleading the public on the take-off of MAUSTECH which is not existing, among others,” the ASUP coordinator submitted.

Meanwhile, efforts to get the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Taiwo Adeoluwa, to react on behalf of the state government proved abortive, as his phone was switched off, as at the time of filing this report.
