Benue State, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, has inaugurated members of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission, (BSIEC), with a charge on them to conduct a free fair and credible polls that would accurately reflect the will and aspirations of the people of the state.

Speaking during the inauguration on Thursday, March 27, 2024, at Government House, Makurdi, Governor Alia said the event marks a significant milestone in the journey of democracy, particularly at the grassroots level in Benue State.

He congratulated the brand new Chairman and members of BSIEC saying their rigorous screening process conducted by the Benue State House of Assembly deserves commendation.

He appreciated Assembly members for their prompt attention to the nominations and confirmations explaining that each of them has been selected based on their nonpartisan stance, outstanding qualifications, integrity, and unwavering commitment to democratic principles, which are fundamental to the progress of the state and the core principles required for the survival of the thriving democracy.

He said “In nominating each member, we were guided by the law establishing the commission, which unequivocally demands that the chairman and members possess unquestionable integrity.

“This underscores the critical role that the commission plays in laying the foundation for our democracy, as the Local Government Councils and council wards serve as the primary interface between the government and the people.

“I entrust upon you the responsibility of ensuring the consolidation of democracy at this vital level by conducting elections that are free, fair, and credible, accurately reflecting the will and aspirations of the people of Benue State.

“Our people deserve nothing less than a system where their voices are heard through their votes,” he said.

Governor Alia urged them to demonstrate courage and steadfastness in the face of challenges assuring that the government stands firmly behind them in their noble endeavour.

He also pledged government’s commitment to upholding the independence of the Commission as well as the tenets of democracy and in ensuring that the electoral process in Benue State is transparent, credible, and inclusive.

Alia also charged them to promptly embark on outlining the program of activities and devising a realistic election timetable.

He called on all well-meaning citizens of Benue State to support the members BSIEC in ensuring the success of democratic process in the state so that “Together, we can build a future where fairness, justice, and progress reign supreme.”

Those inaugurated were the Chairman, Dr John Chen, and members including Terhemen Shom, Theodore Iordye, Aikighe Deva, Isaac Edache, Gloria Clement and Peter Ogagbolo.

Speaking on behalf of the Electoral Commission members, the Chairman BSIEC, Dr John Chen, said they understood the duties of their offices and the yearnings of the people of the state.

Chen said they would not disappoint both the Governor and the people as they have a clear vision of what is expected of them and would not deviate from them.
