Gunmen attacked a police checkpoint at Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, yesterday, and killed a policeman.

Police spokesman in Ebonyi State, DSP Joshua Ukandu, who confirmed the attack, said the gunmen also set the police van on the spot ablaze.

“It happened early on Thursday morning. I have been trying to get the details of what happened, but one police officer was killed and a vehicle was burnt. More details will be made available soon,’’ the Ebonyi State police command spokesman said.

Barely three weeks ago, precisely on March 8, gunmen attacked a police checkpoint at the Ebiya Bridge, along the Hilltop area of Ebonyi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, killing four policemen and two girls in the violent attack.

Also, on February 2, one police officer lost his life when gunmen attacked a police patrol team, along Ngbo-Effium road in Ohaukwu LGA of the state. The police officer was killed in a gun duel between the gunmen and members of the police patrol team. Another police officer was reportedly wounded in the shootout.
