•Enugu community cries out over neglect by successive govts

 From Magnus Eze, Enugu

Ask the people of Agu Umabor, Nsukka Local Government, Enugu State, they will tell you that their place is perhaps the most neglected community in the state. They believe successive governments were insensitive to their plights.

For them, government only remember them when it comes to electioneering, they crisscross the community in search of votes. The community is aggrieved that the only tangible presence of government in the area is the now abandoned Agu Umabor-Breme-Eha-Alumona Road.

The project was initiated by the immediate past administration of Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. The road project, the only artery that should connect them to the outside world has become a death trap and needs urgent attention.

When some indigenes of the area met recently under the auspices of Agu Umabor Elites Group, they deliberated over the deplorable state of their road, primary school and dearth of other social amenities including electricity. The group at its annual general meeting on Sunday, December 31, 2023, appealed to Governor Peter Mbah to intervene and save the community from the inherent ecological dangers when the rain comes.

The group after inspecting the critical infrastructure discovered that the only road in the community, Agu Umabor-Breme-Eha-Alumona Road that was almost completed by the last administration is abandoned and the community shall be completely cut off in a matter of months.

This is because of the heavy gully created by the abandoned road project: “The road is so crucial as it connects Agu-Umabor-Mbu-Ikem and Enugu. The community is agrarian with a population of over 100,000. The only primary school in the area is also in a dilapidated state.

“The rural electrification of the community is also abandoned despite the community’s efforts and individual contributions of three standard brand-new transformers.”

The communique stated that the AGM featured the election of new officials of the group with Emeka Abonyi, President; Josephat Onah, Vice President; Chris Ogbu, Secretary General, while Boniface Ugwuanyi is the Public Relations Officer.

They applauded the Parish Priest of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Breme, Rev. Fr. Edward Okeke and president, Agu-Umabor Town Union, Chris Odo, as well as the traditional ruler, Igwe Kelvin Mamah, for their efforts in addressing the problems of the community.
