A group, Federalist Movement of Nigeria, has called on President Bola Tinubu to fulfill his promises during campaigns and subsequent inauguration as president, to engender true federalism to foster unity, equity, and sustainable development.

This call was contained in a letter signed by the president of the group, Adetomiwa Adetilewa and addressed to the Office of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The group urged the president to embark on restructuring of Nigeria along the principles of true federalism as he had clamoured for throughout his political journey.

The Movement stressed that Nigeria can only thrive when governance is decentralized, and power is distributed equitably, noting that true federalism is not just a political philosophy but practical solution to the socio-economic and political issues that are currently bedevilling the country.

The letter reads partly: “We understand the challenges facing our great nation and recognize the crucial role that restructuring plays in addressing these challenges. As you may recall, during your campaign and subsequent inauguration, you emphasized the need for Nigeria to embrace true federalism to foster unity, equity, and sustainable development. Your vision of a restructured Nigeria resonated with many citizens who believe this is the path to a stronger, more prosperous nation.

“We kindly remind you of the importance of fulfilling this promise. With its diverse cultures, languages, and regions, Nigeria can only thrive when governance is decentralized, and power is distributed equitably. True federalism is not just a political philosophy; it is a practical solution to the socio-economic and political issues that our nation currently faces.”

The group, however, said that as a think-tank organization, it will be ready to contribute its expertise and resources to facilitate the development of a new constitution that would reflect the values of true federalism.

“By working collaboratively, we can help design an acceptable process that will help draft a constitution that not only adheres to the principles of true federalism but also stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of the Nigerian people. The Federalist Movement of Nigeria is ready to engage in meaningful discussions, provide research support, and offer any assistance required to ensure the success of this vital endeavor”, the letter reads further.

On the proposed State Police by the National Assembly, the Federalist Movement declared that such creation will fail to work unless the corresponding corresponding constitutional amendment are put in place.

According to the group, such a step will further defeat the principle of federalism while strengthening the lopsided unitary system.

“Restructuring shouldn’t just be about transferring responsibility to the lower level of government; it should come simultaneously with the resources needed to perform such responsibility. The issue of case jurisdiction is not addressed, while the power to prosecute still rests in the hands of the federal police. Will the existing police barracks and posts be transferred to the states? Or will they have to build theirs? Will the state recruit without using federal police college facilities for training? All these are issues we can help address in our overhaul approach to total restructuring and comprehensive constitutional amendment.

“We understand the complexities involved in restructuring a nation. However, we are confident that with your leadership and the collective efforts of all stakeholders, we can build a fair, just, and prosperous Nigeria for all its citizens,” the group concluded in the letter.
