Gunmen went on rampage on Thursday night at Uburu, the home town of Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi in Ohaozara Local Government Area. They shot two local vigilante members dead while some others sustained gunshot injuries. It was gathered that the gunmen attacked the vigilante group as they mounted a checkpoint at Obuegu, along the Isu Achara Road of the community.
A stakeholder from the area who spoke on the incident added that the bodies of the victims had been deposited at the morgue while those who sustained gunshot injuries were being moved to a hospital in Abakaliki for treatment. In a similar development, hoodlums numbering about 30 in the same night, also reportedly attacked the residence of Mr. Ogbonnaya Agu, the Coordinator of Akaeze Development Centre in the neighbouring Ivo Local Government Area of the state.
A source said that the assailants stormed the politician’s residence at Ogidi, Akaeze, but could not gain access into the premises. The source who pleaded anonymity said that after their failed attempt to gain access into the place, they fired gunshots for over 30 minutes and set a part of the building and vehicles parked outside ablaze.
According to him, while they were leaving the place, they saw some persons at a shop and fired shots there. The shop owner was killed while others sustained bullet injuries.
Public Relations Officer of Ebonyi State Police Command, Chris Anyanwu, could not be reached to react to the incident.
