• We wouldn’t accept this dastardly act – Youths

The crisis has engulfed the Umulogho community of the Obowo council area of Imo state following the alleged torturing to death of a youth of the community by military personnel and a hotel owner over a missing phone.

This is even as youths of the community have vowed not to take what they described as an intolerable situation where an individual wilfully murdered a youth of the community over the alleged stealing of a phone.

A reliable source from the community disclosed that on Sunday, Ebuka Nwaneri deceased was tortured to death by one of the military personnel whose phone was stolen and one Ibe Obasi, owner of a hotel where the military man had gone for relaxation.

According to the source, ” What led to the present crisis in Umulogho community in Obowo council area of Imo state, is that deceased Ebuka Nwaneri was alleged accused owned by one of the military personnel posted to Obowo council area for internal security. The military man had gone to a hotel which is owned by Ibe Obasi for relaxation and his phone went missing. It was the military man, Ibe Obasi and another person now at large that tortured Ebuka Nwaneri who they accused of allegedly stealing the military man’s phone because they said that he had come to the earlier and left.

Continuing, ” They dragged him back to the hotel where he was tortured by Ibe Obasi owner of the hotel, the military man and another person now at large. They proceeded to lock him up in the Generating House of the Hotel after torturing him where later died. We are not even sure if he was the one who actually stole the phone just that he came to the hotel earlier and left. Ibe Obasi has been arrested and is at the Obowo Divisional Police headquarters right now.”

Mbakwe Chimezie, an indigene of the community, said that the Community will not tolerate such a dastardly act from anybody no matter the case.

“It is a murder case. One of our youths was killed for an allegation of having stolen a phone which is yet to be proven and then he was tortured to death. If the suspect is set free, then this dastardly act will become a norm in this community, We will not condone it no matter who is involved. We must do something about it,” he lamented.
