In a significant political move, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has signed the amended Kano State Emirates Council bill into law, just hours after its passage by the Kano State House of Assembly.

The new law dissolves the existing Emirate Council and removes the five Emirs appointed by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Governor Yusuf has also reinstated Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the former Emir of Kano who was deposed in 2020, to his former position. This development marks a reversal of the actions taken under the now-abrogated Kano State Emirates Council Law of 2019. The repealed law, signed by then-Governor Ganduje, had created five separate Emirates: Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye.

Sanusi was dethroned on March 9, 2020, on charges of insubordination, and was replaced by Aminu Ado Bayero, who was moved from the Bichi Emirate to Kano. The new legislation dissolves all offices created under the repealed law and mandates that district heads appointed or elevated under the former law revert to their previous positions.

The Commissioner for Local Government is tasked with overseeing all transitional arrangements. This includes managing the assets and liabilities of the abolished Emirates and handling the new structures established under the repealed Principal Law dated December 5, 2019. The affected Emirs of the five Emirates are directed to hand over all properties in their possession to the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

This legislative change is expected to have significant implications for the traditional leadership structure in Kano State, reflecting a broader shift in the political landscape.
