From Okey Sampson, Umuahia

The Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon Benjamin Kalu, has given free medical treatment to over 2,000 persons as part of activities marking his 53rd birthday anniversary.

This is even as the former Senator who represented Abia Central in the upper legislative chamber, Mrs Nkechi Nwaogu congratulated Kalu on his birthday.

There were free eye surgeries and people were given glasses to help improve their sight.

Apart from the locals with one eye problem or the order, students from the School of the Blind, Afara, Umuahia North Local Government Area, were equally examined during the event.

Speaking at the event, Kalu promised to take care of the medical bills of those whose cases were curable.

The Deputy Speaker said he decided to mark his 53rd birthday with the aged and underprivileged members of the society at his Bende country home, in Bende Local Government Area of Abia state, to give them a sense of belonging.

“The decision to celebrate my birthday with the underprivileged instead of the political class from Abuja and beyond was based on divine direction from God.
