The war on terrorism and corruption by the administration of President Muhammaadu Buhari on Tuesday received a major boost from the Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof Rahamon Bello who threw his weight behind the fight against the two cankerworms.
Prof Bello who backed President Buhari’s war on terrorism and corruption at the first day of the 2014/2015 convocation ceremonies in which 2,585 graduating students were awarded diplomas, certificates and degrees in five faculties acknowledged results are being achieved against the two menace.
Said Bello: ‘’We want to commend the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammadu Buhari for the giant strides his government has taken and the results achieved on the two cankerworms eating into the fabrics of Nigeria viz terrorism and corruption.
‘’We salute the President’s courage and urge him to continue unabated until the two issues are completely wiped out’’.
According to him, on it part, the university have taken steps to play its expected roles to complement government’s efforts through research and advisory roles stressing that research centres have been set up into various aspects of the issues and to continuously proffer solutions that would create a peaceful and corruption-free nation.
The VC explained that on the first day of the convocation ceremonies, 2,585 made up of faculties of Arts (393), Education (605), Environmental Sciences (201), Sciences (710)and Social Sciences (676) would admitted to their diplomas, certificates and degrees.
Giving a further breakdown, Bello said 66 graduated with First Class with Environmenatl Sciences recording the highest with 36 followed by Sciences with 16, 860 obtained Second Class Upper, 1,246 Second Class Lower, 394 got Third Class while 19 made pass.
He used the occasion to celebrate Ayodele Daniel Dada from the Department of Psychology who made history in the 54-year-old university by obtaining Cumulative GPA of 5.00.
‘’UNILAG continues to maintain the tradition of excellence and of producing quality graduates that do compete favourably with their counterpart all over the World. This is in line with our vision and we have vigorously maintained this tradition over the years’’, Bello stated.
Bello used the opportunity to advised the graduating students to contribute their quota to the development of the nation and their alma mater.
The UNILAG VC also highlighted some achievements recorded last noting that the institution bagged countless awards and laurels in academic, social and sporting competitions.
Pro-Chancellor and chairman, governing council of UNILAG, Prof Jerry Gana lauded the VC, Prof Bello, Senate and lecturers for producing quality students who he expect to play major role in nation building.
Gana who showered encomium on Dada and other First Class graduates said with degrees from the UNILAG, they have been empowered to contribute to national development even as he urged them to move forward with a clear vision to excel in their chosen fields.
The convocation ceremonies were witnessed by three VCs from Benue State University, Nigerian Turkish Nile University, Tai Solarin University of Education, Chief (Mrs.) Oprah Benson, Yeye Oge of Lagos and traditional rulers.
