The Kano State House of Assembly has passed Kano Emirates Council Law 2024 after scaling the 3rd reading.

Upon the governor’s assent, the law abrogates the establishment of the five emirate councils in the state.

Highlights of the new law which was passed on Thursday morning include the setting aside of all offices established under the repealed law.

In this light, all district heads elevated or appointed under the repealed law are now to revert to their previous positions and ranks.

It could be recalled that the Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment number 2) Law, 2024, was sponsored by the Majority Leader and member representing the Dala Constituency, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa.

The repelled law was first assented to by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on December 5, 2019, while its amendment came on 14 October 2020. An additional amendment to the same law was made on 11 April 2023.

The repelled Law established the five emirates in the state namely; Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya and Karaye emirate councils.

The repelled law also impacted the last-minute intrigues that led to the deposition of the former Emir of Kano, Sarkin Muhammadu Sanusi.

In the meantime, the people of the ancient city are deeply divided along political party lines over the development.

However, there is a consensus among the majority of the people of the various emirates and the pro-five emirates groups that the unfolding development was in bad faith and would retard development at the grassroots.
