National President, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Dr. Chris Isiguzo, has said told journalists that they have a critical role to play in raising awareness, fostering public debate, and catalysing action to address climate change, deforestation, pollution, biodiversity loss, and other environmental issues.

He made the disclosure in a media release, which he issued on Friday in commemoration of the World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) 2024, with the theme: ‘A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis’.

The World Press Freedom Day, which is marked every May 3rd in line with declaration of the United Nations General Assembly, is dedicated to celebrating the fundamental principles of press freedom, defending the rights of journalists, and promoting the importance of a free and independent media in democratic societies.

Isiguzo specifically called on journalists, media organisations, and critical stakeholders to uphold press freedom, champion environmental reporting, promote solutions and action, foster collaboration and solidarity, and support journalists’ safety and well-being.

He reaffirmed the commitment of NUJ to defending press freedom, promoting ethical journalism, and advocating the rights and safety of journalists across Nigeria. He stressed that press freedom is essential for democracy, accountability, and the protection of human rights.
