Nigeria’s D’Tigress last night emerged the new champion of Africa after beating title holder Senegal by 65-48 points at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2017 in Mali.
Yesterday’s victory for the Nigerian team at the Palais des Sports Salamatou Maiga, was a confirmation of their superiority over the Senegalese having beaten them at the group stage .
It is recalled that the D’Tigress, had in 2015, beaten the Lionesses 64-57 for their second African title in Abuja.
Senegal started yesterday’s final game on a good note as they won the first quarter by 18-12.
D’Tigress however bounced back in the second quarter and eventually went all the way to record their third continental victory.
The Nigerian girls would alongside Senegal represent Africa in the World Championship next year in Spain.
Ahead of the 25th edition Final yesterday, Senegal have won 12 titles and played in 16 Finals, a record held by no other side in African women’s basketball
The last time Nigeria won the tournament was in 2005 in Abuja when Nigeria hosted the 17th edition of the tournament between December 20th and 28.
