Over 20,000 local and foreign athletes will participate in the marathon race International competition slated for September 14, 2024 after the Olympics games in Paris, France.

The Executive Director of Fair Play Sports International Agency, Jacob Onu disclosed this at a press briefing in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital.

He noted that Governor Francis Nwifuru has approved the international marathon event.

He described the event as first ever recognised international marathon to be held in East of the Niger, which will showcase the rich economic, and hospitality of the state.Onu said Governor Nwifuru would be accompanied by many eminent leaders of the country including the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, President of Nigeria Olympic committee to flag off the event.“The event shall take place here in the beautiful city of Abakaliki on Saturday September 14, 2024 shortly after the Olympic Games in Paris, France with over 20,000 athletes, both local and foreign. These 20,000 local and foreign athletes are expected to register and participate,” he stated.

The state Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Chief Richard Idike said the state government in collaboration with Fair Play Sports International Agency would host the marathon race.

He opined that there would be adequate preparation to ensure success of the event.
