Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has congratulated teachers in the state as they join the rest of the world to mark this year’s World Teachers Day.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Terver Akase and made available to Daily Sun, the Governor described teachers as pillars and the future of the state’s education system.
Governor Ortom who noted that no wage or compensation would be enough for the sacrifices made by those who have chosen the teaching profession in the training and moulding of characters at different stages of education posited that the strength of every society lies in its standard of education which is driven by the quality of its teachers.
The Governor who described the theme of this year’s World Teachers’ Day which is ‘Valuing Teachers, Improving their Status’ as appropriate explained that it has further drawn the attention of nations to the significant role teachers play and the need to improve their working conditions and treat them with greater respect.
He assured that his administration would continue to accord importance to teachers of the state which would manifest in improved payment of their salaries and pensions to those who have retired as well as ensuring that no teacher who is due for promotion is denied the right.
Ortom also promised that in line with his administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers, the State Government would clear the backlog of salaries owed teachers as soon as funds are available.
