The Federal Government has disclosed that women, especially those who are into farming, remain the most marginalised when it comes to benefitting from certain amenities.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, made the disclosure recently, when he launched the National Gender Action Plan for Agriculture (NGAP), in Abuja.

Represented by the Parmanent Secretary of his ministry, Dr. Mu’azu Abdulkadir, Ogbeh said, “out of 70 percent of women farmers who contribute to the food bank of the nation, only 20 percent have access to productive resources, while the rest suffer from poor access to finance and farm inputs, such as fertilisers, improved seeds, farm machinery, agro chemicals, access to land and market access, among others.”

The minister, however, assured Nigerians that the advent of NGAP will change the narrative.

Meanwhile, Director General of Poultry Association of Nigeria, (PAN), Onalle Akpa, disclosed that Nigeria could generate over N3.4 billion from daily consumption of  eggs only if government would increase its support.

He said: “Available indices indicate that of the one billion people that suffer from chronic hunger, 171 million of them, under the age of five years (children), are chronically malnourished.

“The economy of the eggs in Nigeria is enormous, as an egg a day for 50 percent of the Nigerian population will produce a daily economic value of N1.7 billion. Annual revenue from egg sales will be N620,000,000,000. If per capita consumption of eggs increases to 100 eggs per person per year, then annual revenue would be N340,000,000,000,” Akpa said.
