By now most Nigerians paying any attention are aware of the horrible drag racing accident involving the son of The President. Yusuf Buhari is not only undergoing treatment in Abuja, he is also on top of the country’s Twitter trends. The last time he was a heavy trending topic was in May, 2015, when he was identified to the general public for the first time in a photo with his father, who at the time was President-elect – a day before his swearing-in ceremony.

Until two years ago a majority of Nigerians never knew of, let alone had ever heard of, Yusuf’s existence.

Then, as now, the mild-manned and elusive son has been a source of curious fascination for Nigerians. Here are five things you need to know about him:

  1. He is the only son of President Muhammadu Buhari with his second (and current) wife Aisha, with whom the commander-in-chief has five children. Yusuf is also the only male of the President’s surviving eight children. The President’s only other son from his first – and now late – wife Safinatu (who bore him five children), Musa, is deceased.

  2. Yusuf is a 2016 graduate, along with his sister Zahra, of the University of Surrey in the U.K.

  3. The President once commented that he “stopped him from joining the army”. Yusuf, who is rarely in the public eye, except for the occasional family pictures and rare sightings with his father, unlike The President, has no military training.
  4. He shares a close bond with his father, hanging out with him in the farm, even accompanying him on his first official trip to the U.S following his inauguration in 2015.

  5. He keeps a low profile on social media, with his twitter handle @YusufBuhari_ rarely seeing much activity (just 116 tweets), and having only posted a retweet more than a year ago. His most recent tweet was on 10 Feb, 2016, where he posted a short patriotic message and photo: “For the love of our country and the future generation. ”

And now all of Nigeria stands with Yusuf Buhari and his family at this difficult time, with prayers and support that he pulls through in one piece.
