Tragedy struck in the wee hours of Thursday, when a one-time Councilor and father of seven children, Benbede Kitchen, committed suicide in his house by hanging himself with his bed sheet.

The deceased, aged 43-years from Ekeremor Local Government Area  of Bayelsa State, was popularly known as G.K Bekegbo.

He reportedly did not leave a suicide note behind.

During the administration of former governor Diepreye Alamiyeseigha, Kitchen was a supervisory Member on Health of the Rural Development Authority (RDA)

Kitchen’s death has thrown the entire Vanguard Close, Imgbi road into confusion as residents and relatives are still in shock over what could have led the deceased to kill himself.

According to investigations while some residents blamed economic hardship for his action, some said he actually killed himself because of the suspected infidelity of the wife as the deceased could no longer fend for the family

It was gathered that the deceased had on the previous day embarked on a desperate and frustrating search for his wife, Madam Beauty who is the bread winner of the family dealing in Kerosene business.

At the deceased home, kinsmen of the deceased from Ekeremor Local Government area‎ Council were seen gathered making arrangement on how to handle the situation.

A resident, Mr. Benjamin Samuel who identified himself as the caretaker of the deceased house said the deceased came to his room and asked for a phone number

‎ “I am the caretaker of the building, around 12 midnight he came to my room and asked me to give him a particular phone number which I did, only for me to hear people crying and a knock on my door around 6: am, at first I thought it was armed robbers. I was led to one of the rooms upstairs where I saw his lifeless body dangling on the ceiling; I was the one that brought his corpse down together with one of my boy. Later I was told that he was making some angry calls midnight before he went to hang himself. I am confused and disturbed why he chose to kill himself leaving seven lovely children behind. It is unfortunate.”

Another resident who craved anonymity said, the deceased has not been in good terms with his wife as he has complained privately to some close friends that he is being starved of sex.

“Around midnight, he went about knocking the tenants’ houses, complaining that he was looking for his wife. When he knocked at my room, I told him that she was not here, some of us also tried to help him find the wife because her number was switch off. Only for us to wake up this morning to discover that he has hanged himself, maybe it is because of the wife.

A family member and senior brother to the deceased, Chief D.M Apelibiri said people should not be hasty in jumping into conclusion on the reason for committing suicide.

The Police Public Relations Officer( PPRO), Mr. Asinim Butwats said the Police have not been notified of the incident.
