“The story of the Enugu Rangers is a story of guts and determination, considering that they got into the finals of the Challenge Cup just a year after a dreadful civil war, which brought so much destruction to lives and property in the Eastern States of the country where Enugu was the capital. One year after the end of the war in 1970, the people of Enugu and its surroundings were able to get together a team of ageing players mixed with up-and-coming young men to challenge for the cup and they just lost by 2-1 to WNDC of Ibadan. They then embarked on an intensive training schedule and recruitment drive and came back to win the cup three years in a row in 1974, 1975 and 1976 to join Ibadan, as the only two teams to achieve this feat.”

See Rangers International FC A History of a People, Enugu 2016
I was on the road Sunday night, when my telephone lines jammed. From the US, London, Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Enugu, all over the country fans and former players were calling in in celebration. Many were crying, others reportedly were partying and drinking in jubilation… “Onyeamuma (the Prophet), you have done it again, you predicted the Rangers victory when nobody dared to drop their hat!” At a stage, I had to stop and move the vehicle away from the busy highway. Even though most of the callers were shouting it out, it was when I had packed by the roadside that I had them clearly. “Enugu Rangers after thirty-two years are Champions again!”
My hillarious reporters were emphatic on their declaration even after I pointed out that the Rangers match against the El Kanemi FC is the last bridge to cross. Not to be the one to break up the party for these many fans of the legendary club, I went back home and switched off the phone and then decided to postpone the publication of my finished dramatic Column… The Court Martial of Admiral Amakiri Ekpetesi Don Polo.
The triumph of the Rangers FC years after their last win is reverberating and an inspiration to the local coaches, who have failed to be recognised at home. Also, the triumph of Rangers is a victory for resilience. A showpiece of  extraordinary courage and a manifestation of the club’s renowned fighting spirit. From here we are accosted with a familiar resurgence of the Rangers native character readily employed from the beginning to surmount obstacles, climbing the steep, rugged mountains, each player on one foot agonising all the way to touch the sky.

I am 70 years old, a former Editor with the Newbreed Magazine. Emma, you have an elephantine memory. That match between Rangers and the Shooting Stars I remember very well and listened to the relay on Radio Nigeria. The Sportscaster of that match was the unforgettable Ernest Okonkwo, the man who gave Segun Odegbami the nickname “Mathematical.”
