Members of the Nigeria Football and Other Sports Supporters Club will today converge at the international headquarters of the body on Ayinde Giwa Street, Surulere, Lagos to officially mourn the deaths of Amodu Shuaibu and Stephen Keshi.
According to the President General of the Club, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo who spoke to Daily Sunsports on the programme, the day of mourning is important because both coaches served Nigeria meritoriously.
“We declared Wednesday as a day of mourning for our late coaches Amodu and Keshi because it is the right thing to do. Our members and friends will converge today at the secretariat to mourn them. In addition, we’ve also opened condolence registers in all state branches and internationally for members to sign.”
According to the club, the late Keshi devoted his life to sports especially football, playing for the national team before coming back as a Coach to handle the Super Eagles of Nigeria which he led to win the African Nations Cup after 19 years of waiting and even handled the Malian and Togo national teams and helped Togo qualify for their first ever World Cup.
“The death of keshi came as a big shock to members of the club. This was a man who captained the national team for many years and opened the way for Nigerians to play professional football in Europe.”
“Amodu will always be remembered as a patriotic and industrious Nigeria who rescued the country three times during the Nations Cup/ World Cup qualifiers. During his time, he played fifteen matches, won twelve and drew three.”
By his death, Nigeria has lost another tactician whose replacement would be very difficult to find,” the statement concluded.
