Obinna Odogwu, Abakaliki

A medical doctor attached to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA) in Ebonyi State, Dr Chidi (surname withheld) on Tuesday night slumped and died shortly after the Super Eagles lost to the Argentine team in a 2:1 game.

The deceased, until his sudden death, was a consultant with the Family Medicine Department of the federal hospital and was said to have married.

According to sources from the hospital, the doctor reportedly had cardiac arrest after the Argentine team clipped the Super Eagles’ wings with two goals against one.

He was said to have been watching the football match with high hope that the latter would cruise home with victory just like other Nigerians expected but had his hope cut short.

Sources suggested that the Nigeria’s loss in the World Cup might have been responsible for his suspected cardiac arrest which reportedly led to his untimely death.

However, one of his colleagues who pleaded anonymity confirmed the incident but dismissed the suspicion saying that the Super Eagles’ loss might not have led to his tragic death.

“It’s true that he was watching the match when he collapsed but I don’t think it has anything to do with the match. I think it is just an isolated case. It can happen to another person. It’s a sudden death which could have happened without the match.

“You know for you to say a definite cause of the death, you have to do an autopsy. And for you to get an autopsy and for you to get an autopsy you have to get the consent from his family.

“So we cannot say definitively. It might be an infection. It happened at his residence. He is staying with his brother in-law. That’s where the incident happened”, he said.
