While a lot of Nigerians would have no reason to call the police their friend, a few in the force have endeared themselves to some hearts in the nation.
One of such is Divisional Crime Officer, Isolo Police Division, and Superintendent of Police Oyinpreyebofa Frances Giese-Adamu, popularly known as The Peacemaker in police circle. Oyin, as she’s fondly called believes so much in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), which she has used to resolve cases that ordinarily should have ended in court.
SP Giese- Adamu was honoured with Excellence in Security Service Award (Alternative Dispute Resolution) and on the basis of the case brought before her by Mr. and Mrs. Kayode and Joy Dare who were seeking divorce.
Instead of allowing the couple split, as a wife and mother, she used her money, time and wisdom to settle the grievances of the two parties who are now back together joyfully, all thanks to the amazing SP Oyin.
It was indeed an emotional atmosphere as the video interview of the couple was played at the Lagos @50 Hall of Fame Awards, which held at the Sheba Event Center under the distinguished chairmanship of Sir. Demola Aladekomo, Founder, Chams Plc and Chairman, Smart City Resort Plc.
On her motivation for taking that noble action of saving the collapsing marriage, Giese -Adamu said “When I was joining the police, I made up my mind that I was going to make an impact and I have done so to the best of my ability.
“People keep asking me why I like peaceful coexistence and willing to go the extra mile to ensure that cases brought before me are settled amicably without rancor and I say the motivation comes naturally with the help of God. When I listened to that couple, I just felt theirs could be resolved if they would just listen and communicate and discuss their grievances. And that settlement came with a lot of sacrifice and I don’t regret it, because the couple are happily and joyfully together again. This is not the only case, there was another case of a driver that was accused wrongly of theft by his boss, but after listening intensely to the driver, I knew deep down that this young man did not steal his boss’s money but because the boss insisted that he has to be charged to court, I had to issue a personal cheque to reimburse him just to ensure the matter ended amicably because I was convinced that the driver didn’t steal his money. I believe so much in Alternative Dispute Resolution,” she said.
Also speaking at the event, President of TECHTV, Mr. Don Pedro Aganbi, organizer of Lagos @50 Hall of Fame Awards said  “What SP Giese-Adamu does is uncommon in the Nigerian Police Force and indeed our society. It has buttressed the fact that the police is truly our friend. In a society where marriages are falling apart daily, if there is a woman, a police woman for that matter, resolving issues that should ordinarily end in the law court amicably, I think it’s worth mentioning and celebrating.”
SP Oyinpreyebofa Frances Giese-Adamu holds a Master’s Degree in Industrial & Labour Relations from Delta State University, Abraka. She enlisted in the Nigerian Police Force as a cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police in 2002, trained at Police Academy, Wudil, Kano before she was posted to Enugu State after graduating in 2004.
She has attended several courses and conferences home and abroad and is a member of International Association of Chiefs of Police and International Association of Women Police Officers.
