Worried by the spate  of insecurity and the regular smuggling of arms and ammunition into the country, the Federal Government is raising high walls at the nation’s borders to check smugglers of dangerous weapons.

Speaking while directing the construction of Seme Border fence, the Customs Area Controller (CAC) Seme Border, Comptroller Mohammed Aliyu, said the idea is to block the illegal routes which may be used by miscreants for various cross-border crimes or vices.

He recalled the number of times, arms and ammunition were seize in 2016, at the Nigeria’s seaports and said smugglers, who have seen that the ports are impassable, may want to move their deadly cargoes through the borders.

Aliyu said the Customs comptroller general’s warning to all border commands to mount strict surveillance at the border posts is to frustrate plans of the smugglers.

He said the command will ensure all identified loopholes are fully sealed as the use of scanners has made it impracticable for any concealment to pass through.
He seized the occasion to announce that the command realised N438,680,964.64 in May 2018.

“The command’s commitment towards intelligence-driven operations has led to the arrest and seizures of 130 contraband goods with a total duty paid value (DPV) of N95,503,165.00,” he said.

The CAC, who is also the chairman of the Joint Border Security Meeting (JBSM), said he would ensure effective collaboration among the security agencies at the borders for efficient management and security.
