The zonal command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in South East geo-political zone of the country, has disclosed that a total of 206 casualties have been recorded in the road accidents that took place in the months of September and October this year.

It also revealed that a total of 44 persons lost their lives in the road crashes that occurred in the period under review in the South East.

Zonal Commanding Officer, Zone RS9 of the FRSC, Samuel Obayemi, disclosed this, in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, during 2018 Ember months campaign flag-off.

He noted that road crashes have risen in the geopolitical zone in the last two months.

Obayemi said the total number of crashes recorded in October last month was 34 as against 26 recorded in September in the zone.

“The number of persons injured in October was 108 as against 51 recorded in September. The total casualty for the two months came to 206 while the number killed was 44”, he disclosed.

He advised motorists to avoid over speeding, overloading, wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving to avoid road accidents.

According to him, contrary to erroneous belief held by members of the public that there are blood-sucking demons on the roads during the Ember months, the belief, according him is baseless as careful driving guarantees safety.

Also speaking, the state Sector Commander of the corps, Stella Uchegbu, said that the corps enforcement of road traffic laws and prosecution of traffic offenders would be intensified.

“We will provide prompt rescue services and adequate care to road traffic crash victims”, she said.
