Some residents of Ado-Ekiti, capital of Ekiti state, took over major streets on Friday, demanding the resignation of the Governor of the State Ayodele Fayose.

The protesters, who alleged that Fayose is richer than the state, accused the governor of keeping them in bondage.

Chanting anti-government songs, the placard-wielding protesters called on the federal government to probe the governor.

Some of the inscriptions on their placards were: ‘Fayose Must Go’, ‘We Don’t Want a Criminal as our Governor’, ‘How Can Fayose be Richer Than Ekiti?’, ‘Where is Ekiti’s N100 million?’, ‘What Happened to Ekiti Airport Fund?’

A protester, who refused to disclose his identity, alleged that Fayose had been helping himself with the resources of the state, while leaving workers to starve.

He challenged the governor to prove that the allegations against him were untrue, asking the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) not to get distracted by the “antics of the drowning man”.

“We are dying and he is busy swimming in luxury. Workers have not been paid for six months, but our so-called governor is more interested in fighting those who can be of help. Enough is enough,” he said.

“How long can we continue like this? The federal government should come to our rescue. We need to be delivered from this tyrant. We are not safe under him.”

However, Lere Olayinka, spokesman of the governor, accused the All Progressives Congress (APC), of sponsoring the protest.

“The protesters are remnants of the Kayode Fayemi administration. They were not even up to 100. Their leader Omotunde Fajuyi is a card carrying member of the APC. Don’t be deceived by the lies that they are activists,” he told TheCable.

“Instead of them to go to Abuja and face President Buhari that has turned the country upside down, they are saying governor should resign. They are saying someone looted Ekiti. Where is the Ekiti that can be looted? The state already looted by the APC government. These people are jokers.”
