The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a teenager raped to death by some neighbourhood thugs at the Abule Ado area of the state.
The teenager, Obiamaka Orakwue, a 14-year-old Senior Secondary School 2 student, died after she was gang-raped in her parent’s residence.
According to reports, the teenager was asleep in her room when the yet-to-be-identified assailants broke into their apartment and gang-raped her after which they hit her head severally against the wall.
Although initial reports said some boys, whose advances the deceased rebuffed, broke into her parents’ residence in the afternoon and pounced on her, the family has revealed that she was actually attacked on the night while others were asleep.
A source told Daily Sun that other members of the family woke up in the morning to find the deceased in a pool of blood in her room.
The family has lodged a report at the Abule Ado Police Station. Preliminary investigation revealed that a window and burglary proof to the girl’s room were broken.
Police Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous-Cole, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident, adding that an investigation had been launched despite the conflicting reports regarding the incident.
He said: “The information gotten for the divisional police officer of Abule Ado is that they were all sleeping at night and when they woke up in the morning and went for her to take her bath, they saw her in a pool of her blood with injury in the head.
“Regardless of the different tales of the event, we are saddled with the responsibility of arresting the culprits.”
Meanwhile, some activists have shown interest in the case and have urged the police to fish out the culprits, who are suspected to be residents of the area.
Towards this end, women and girl child rights activist, Esther Ijewere, using the hashtag #Justice4ObiAmaka, said she was organising a peaceful sit-down protest on Thursday, August 3, 2017, at the Governor’s Office, Alausa.
She said: “As we rejoice and thank God for the release of the six Igbonla boys, let us remember our young girls that are being raped and traumatised. The latest victim is 14-year-old Obiamaka Orakwe, an SSS2 student, who was right in her home raped and killed. Her killers must be found.
“A lot of our young girls would be at home alone during this vacation. We need to keep them safe. Do join the peaceful sit-down protest on Thursday, August 3, 2017, in front of the governor’s office in Alausa, from 8.30am to 11am. It is the only way to ensure the security forces fish out the culprits.”
