Loyalists and supporters of the ruling party, the APC, yesterday trooped out in their large numbers and performed a symbolic cleansing of the traces of the opposition, party, the PDP, from the streets of Osogbo the state capital.
This came on the heels of the South West mega rally held by the party on Saturday to sensitise members and draw their support ahead of the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun which have been scheduled for July and September respectively as well as the general elections in 2019.
PDP national chairman, Prince Uche Seconds and other party chieftains such as former vice president Atiku Abubakar, Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, scores of guber candidates and aspirants among other party stalwarts attended the rally.
The loyalists who were led by the OSUN APC chairman, Prince Gboyega Famodun, had converged at the Mandela Freedom Park Osogbo yesterday morning to perform the cleansing exercise by sweeping the whole environments where the rally was held.
Speaking shortly before the commencement of the symbolic sweeping, Famodun said the exercise became necessary because the Mandela Freedom Park venue and the entire town had been defaced by the South West rally, adding that being a party that cares for the well being of the environment, his APC decided to clean up the mess left behind by the PDP after their rally.
“Because we are a party that cares for the well being of the environment, we decided that APC should clean up the mess left behind by the PDP after their rally on Saturday” he said.
He added that APC was not in any way intimidated by the zonal rally because it was fully prepared for the election.
Famodun said the few people that defected from the APC to the PDP during the rally were no longer relevant to the party.
He disclosed that in the next few months, APC would conduct a primary election to elect the party’s flagbearer for the governorship election.
” We are a political party and we have our programme of events. In the next few months, we shall conduct our primary for our aspirants and subsequently, other events will follow,” he said.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Ajibola Bashiru, said the party embarked on the symbolic cleansing to sweep away hunger and poverty earlier brought to the state by the PDP.
He stressed that the APC remained unrufflef by the PDP rally, insisting that the APC remained the bedrock of politics in OSUN State.
Bashiru said the few APC members that defected to the PDP during the rally were no longer important to the party.
” Specifically, Fatai Diekola who defected to PDP yesterday (Saturday) is a political contractor, claiming to be a politician and we are not bothered about that,” he said.
