It is not, however, clear if Onnoghen will be decorated with the national honour of the Grand Commander of Order of the Niger (GCON) as customary with the inauguration of past CJNs. The decoration is usually done shortly after taking oath of office by the new CJN. The acting president had, on February 8, 48 hours to the expiration of his tenure as acting chief judge sent Onnoghen’s nomination to the Senate for confirmation.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who is currently on extended medical vacation in London had, on November 10, 2016, inaugurated Onnoghen as acting CJN following the retirement of Justice Mahmud Mohammed at the attainment of the mandatory 70 years retirement age.
