As the 2016 Rio Olympic Games draws near, former Olympian and Chairman, Nigeria Sport for All Commission, Prince Henry Amike, has advised Nigerians to make physical exercise as part of their everyday life as it helps to prevent risk of cardiovascular diseases and other wide range of health problems such as stroke, metabolic syndrome, diabetics and depression.
Amike said this yesterday on the occasion of the 2016 Olympic Day Educational Programme held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Amike, said Olympic Day is a day set aside for every one to come together, move together,and learn about Olympic values of excellence. He explained that it is an ideal platform to highlight the benefits of physical activity particularly for young people which allows them to learn about Olympic values and put them into practice in their every day life.
“Olympics is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining the quality of body, will and mind. It seeks to create a way of life based on joy of effort, educational value of good example,social responsibility and respect for universal, fundamental ethical principles.
The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of harmonious development of humankind with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity”,he stated
The  Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung said the idea of Olympics is not a do or die affair but about participation.
The Minister who was represented by Pastor Tayo Oreweme, Lagos Liaison Officer, NSC, said Olympic Day event is not a competition to win prizes, but to serve as a reminder that exercise holds a lot of promises in helping mankind to stay healthy through sports as a way of life.
“We hope that sports will get better in Nigeria and we thank the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) for sponsoring the event.”
The climax of the event was a cultural show presented by both Primary and Secondary Schools in Lagos. The walking and jogging aspect of the Olympic Day activities will hold on Saturday.
