The Attorney General and Minister of Justice in the Sani Abacha regime, Olu Onagoruwa has been reported dead, although Daily Sun could not get a ready confirmation from the family.

Even the Dr. Olu Onagoruwa’s Chambers website did not mention anything about his demise, just the old introduction that the firm has been running for over 35 years of his practice era.

His appointment in the Abacha cabinet pitted him against his colleagues in the human rights sector of legal profession including Gani Fawehinmi. Onagoruwa died at 80 and had been down with stroke for close to 20 years.

The old lawyer was a pitiable sight at the Oputa Panel sitting in 2000 when he testified at the panel in Onika Lagos to the assassination of his young son and fresh law graduate in the hectic days of the Abacha regime.

Testifying that day, Onagoruwa’s tears that he could not hold back made many watchers break down too. He walked into the panel sitting that day with difficulty in his gait and later said he took down with stroke under the pains of the loss of his son and that he never recovered from Oluwatoyin’s assassination by people he said targeted him and felt taking down his son would greatly hit him thereby leaving him incapacitated.

He reportedly died early Friday morning. He had a PhD in law and practiced the profession for years in Lagos but vanished from public glare after his testimony at the Oputa panel over his son’s death.
